Consumption of "White Wine" Increases Skin Cancer Risk

Health - According to the American Cancer Society, it is estimated there are over 76,000 new melanoma cases-a type of deadly skin cancer-in the US by the end of 2016, and more than 10,000 people are expected to die from the disease this year.


As reported by the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, found a close relationship between white wine and the risk of malignant melanoma in women. The risk becomes greater for parts of the body that are rarely exposed to sunlight.

To look at lifestyle linkages with melanoma risk, researchers from Brown University analyzed data from three large studies involving 210,252 participants for approximately 18 years. Scientists have analyzed a questionnaire about the frequency of food in an effort to find out how much alcohol is consumed by many people and how often.

The researchers found that every one glass of alcohol each day was associated with an increased risk of melanoma by 14 percent. And for a glass of white wine per day is associated with a 13 percent additional risk of melanoma. However, other forms of alcohol, such as beer and red wine, do not significantly impact the risk of melanoma.

The relationship between alcohol and melanoma is most likely to occur for less sun exposure. Therefore a person who likes to consume wine should be able to balance it with healthy foods and vitamins e and d from exposure to enough sun.

People who consumed about one and a half glasses of white wine, 2 percent more likely to have melanoma in the head, neck, arms, or legs, and 73 percent more likely to have melanoma in their back or stomach.
